Josh White Jr.







JOSH WHITE, JR. began performing professionally at the side of his legendary father in 1944, and released his first record the following year. During the 1940s, he shared stages with Lead Belly, Woody Guthrie, Burl Ives, Bill "Bojangles" Robinson, Billie Holiday, Oscar Brand, Pete Seeger, Duke Ellington, Eartha Kitt, Georgie Jessel, and Frank Sinatra; in the 1950s, with Odetta, Bob Gibson, and the Kingston Trio; and in the `60s with Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, Tom Paxton, Judy Collins, David Crosby, Eric Andersen, et al. . In 1949, Josh was awarded a TONY Award for his Broadway debut. And, as a solo folk artist, he has recorded 25 albums, starred in four TV Concert Specials, performed in concert halls around the world, and also for the Pope, Prime Ministers, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, the imprisoned and the poorest of the poor. In 1979, he was recipient of the first Harry Chapin Humanitarian Award; in 1980, was named Voice of the Peace Corps and Voice of VISTA, and in 1987, he received a Grammy nomination for his album Josh White, Jr. with Robin Batteau: Jazz, Ballads and the Blues.
